According to Rand McNally consumers are planning on vacations in 2011, despite the economy. They release a quarterly report showing trends, travel agent usages, destination preferences, budgets and types and lengths of trips.

They tell us traveler's budgets are surprise there. But the thing that amazes me is the amount they say each traveler spends on his or her trip. In the fourth quarter of 2010, $5,768 was spent by each person per trip. This takes into consideration honeymoons, destination weddings, etc.

The top 10 city destinations include Las Vegas, Orlando, Cancun, Miami and Los Angeles.

How about you? Are you traveling? Are you traveling to one of the cities listed? Is your spending in line with the average?

No need to answer...just something to think about.

Time Zones

Traveling across several time zones doesn't have to upset your routine.

In flight, keep exercising your legs with clock wise and counter-clock wise leg rotations. Or get up and move around as much as possible.

Drink plenty of water...not alcohol or caffeine. Dry air in the plane's cabin dehydrates you more than you realize.

Try to sleep. Ear plugs, eye covers and a warm blanket helps.

Eat...but in small quantities.

When you land, stick with your daily routine. If you exercise at 10 am or take a warm bath at 8 it at your destination and acclimate your body to the new time zone.

Monarch Butterflies in Pismo Beach

October through February brings Monarch Butterflies to the coastal areas of California, to escape colder temperatures as far away as Canada.

Pismo Beach was were we caught up with them this year. Warm days encouraged them to be out and about...flying right in front of our faces, landing on the ground right in front of our feet. A few were left hanging around in this tree.

During early mornings and late evenings they cluster, or hang together, in Eucalyptus Trees and Monterey Pines.

Every winery needs a cat...or several. This one resides at Peterson Winery in Healdsburg.
